Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees Betting Preview

The weekend comes to a close with a game between old rivals as the Boston Red Sox take on the New York Yankees. The Red Sox have won the first two games of the series by a combined score of 12-5. However, the Yankees are -150 favorites to win on Sunday, while Boston’s moneyline is listed at +130 as they go for the sweep.

The Yankees are surely more in need of a win than the Red Sox right now. Not only have they dropped the first two games of the series, but they are just 3-9 in their last 12 games. That stretch has dropped them to fourth in the AL East, 5.5 games off the pace.

Of course, the Red Sox are hoping to regain first place in the AL East. Boston has won three in a row and six of nine to put them 12 games over .500. However, that’s only good enough to put them a game behind the Rays for first in the AL East standings.

Rich Man, Poor Man

Garrett Richards will take the mound on Sunday, trying to help the Red Sox get the sweep. Richards is 4-4 with a 3.75 ERA this season, although he’s had some rough outings mixed in with some brilliant performances. However, he’s trending in the right direction, giving up two runs or less in five of his last seven starts.

Richards will get to face a lineup that continues to struggle and underperform, averaging just 2.4 runs per game over the last nine games. Outside of Aaron Judge, virtually every hitter on the Yankees has been a disappointment this season. Miguel Andujar has provided a power spark lately while Gleyber Torres is slowly coming around, but the Yankees are otherwise sluggish offensively at the moment.

The Savior?

Domingo German will start for the Yankees on Sunday in hopes of preventing the sweep. In his first ten starts of 2021, German has been a pleasant surprise, going 4-3 with a 3.27 ERA. In fact, he’s allowed three runs or less in all but one of his starts this year, bringing a surprising level of consistency to the New York rotation.

Of course, German will be facing one of the most potent lineups in baseball on Sunday. Despite a cold stretch in late May, the Red Sox have now scored at least five runs in three straight games. The quartet of J.D. Martinez, Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers, and Alex Verdugo has been on fire all season, with Hunter Renfroe also starting to heat up over the past week.

Bust Out the Brooms

Unfortunately for the Yankees, it looks like things are about to go from bad to worse. New York’s struggling lineup may not perform against Richards, who can pitch like a frontline starter when things are clicking. While German has been good this year, Boston’s lineup is too deep to keep them under wraps for nine innings.

The best-case scenario for the Yankees would be German pitching a gem and forcing a low-scoring game. However, the Red Sox still have more hitters who can change the game with one swing, making Boston the best bet on Sunday night.
