Officials of the World Series of Poker finally announced that the most popular live poker tournament is postponed for fall this year. The main reason for that is the COVID-19 pandemic, which already caused almost all live poker tournaments cancellations or postponements.
There hadn’t been any official news from the WSOP officials for a long time, but they recently announced that they have to postpone the tournament. Despite them hesitating to make any official statements, many poker fans already felt that it was the only logical thing to do.
However, there’s a huge issue here — the World Series of Poker is a huge tournament, featuring hundreds of events and thousands of players. It usually lasts for two months, so moving these two months and fitting WSOP in fall is a very difficult thing to do. It means that there must be some changes to the schedule; we only need to find out which ones.
Let’s take a look at the two possible things that could be done to make WSOP 2020 work.
Excluding Some Events
The first thing that we need to assume when it comes to WSOP is that the majority of players would want the Main Event thrill to take place once again. That’s why it’s important not to cut the length of the Main Event in any way. However, there are many other events that can be excluded, and that’s one of the possibilities that the WSOP organizers are definitely going to do.
The current schedule is very densely packed, and it is virtually impossible to have all the events in fall. However, if they somehow manage to pull it off — then good job for the WSOP team.
Condensing The WSOP Into One Month
One of the approaches is to try to keep most of the events but still condense the entire festival into a shorter period. If it comes to shortening the time needed to conduct all the events, the most likely scenario would be to condense it to one month.
That means that some events might have to be condensed into a single day. One of the ways to do that is to find more room.
Therefore, it wouldn’t be surprising if the WSOP team actually decided to include another venue in Las Vegas apart from Rio. That way, more players will be able to attend, and more events could take place simultaneously.
All of this is, mind you, just speculation of the possible solutions. However, they seem like the most likely thing to do, but we have to wait and see how the team behind WSOP plans to pull it off. They still have a lot of time to settle everything and get it just right.
At this point, it’s very early to make any other kind of prediction regarding the exact date — we only need to wait and see what officials announce. There are many things to take into account, including the fact that the coronavirus might return up to a certain extent in the fall.
