Tyler Patterson was the runner-up in the December 2022 RunGood Poker Series (RGPS) Season Finale Main Event at Thunder Valley Casino Resort in California.
Still, the World Poker Tour (WPT) and World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet champion signed up for the 2023 RGPS $2,500 Buy-In Main Event, beat 476 opponents and won the $200,422 top prize.
The event had a $1,000,000 guarantee. Patterson stated in a live interview that it was strange being in the same position he was in December, engaging in a heads-up battle for the ring.
He made a deal with his opponent last year, which made the battle fun and less stressful. Even so, the recent heads-up action was different.
Patterson’s latest $200,422 is the fourth-largest payout he has in his poker career. Besides, it is the biggest score in RGPS’ history, and it increased the player’s poker career earnings to over $3.3 million.
The champion garnered 1,080 Card Player Player of the Year (POY) points in the recent RGPS Main Event, and it was his third POY-qualified score in 2023. He finished second in two side tournaments at the WPT Rolling Thunder stop in March and amassed 360 points. The Main Event’s 477 entrants exceeded its initial guarantee and formed the $1,064,187 prize pool.
The event attracted many talented players, including Stephen Song (WPT Prime winner), Ethan Yau (WPT High Roller and bracelet winner), Jared Jaffee (bracelet and two-time WPT Main Tour champion), and Jeff Platt (WSOP Circuit ring champion).

Patterson’s Battle of the Blinds
Patterson was in the middle of the chip standings when the players set a nine-handed final table. Paul Sampson had the largest stack when its action kicked off.
Sampson eliminated several players. His pocket queens defeated Kevin O’Donnell’s A-5 suited, sending him packing in fifth place with $49,055.
Patterson busted Shijia Liu in fourth place with $63,945. Still, the former doubled up through Sampson after his pocket tens beat his opponent’s pocket nines. The elimination earned Patterson the first position on the leaderboard.
Darren Rabinowitz’s AHeart SuitKDiamond Suit lost a preflop race to Sampson’s QHeart SuitQClub Suit. The board ran ADiamond SuitQDiamond Suit2Club Suit2Heart Suit9Heart Suit, and Sampson’s queens full sent Rabinowitz packing in third place with $90,315. The latter has over $3.4 million in lifetime poker earnings now.
A tough heads-up battle between Sampson and Patterson lasted for two hours. Sampson used JDiamond Suit3Diamond Suit to shove before Patterson called with ADiamond Suit8Diamond Suit. Yet, the latter earned the title and pot after the ASpade Suit9Club Suit5Spade Suit9Heart Suit3Heart Suit runout as Sampson finished second with $141,585.
