Stephen Chidwick set a new record four years ago when he became the first British poker player to win the 2019 Card Player Player of the Year (POY) award. Still, he was in great form last year as he won the 2022 Card Player POY award. The 33-year-old poker pro reached 25 final tables in the past year.
Chidwick amassed 6,499 total points, 266 more than Farid Jattin’s points. These made him the second player in modern poker to bag two Card Player Player of the Year awards after Daniel Negreanu, a Poker Hall of Famer.
The poker pro stated in an interview after winning the award that it was an amazing accomplishment. He added that poker tournament’s inherent variance made it take long for the results to make sense. Besides, performing well in year-long series is a better accomplishment than winning individual tournaments.
Even so, his consistency isn’t restricted to year-long events only as he has been a key contender in each POY race since 2015. He has finished among the top 50 players eight times during that period.
Surprisingly, Chidwick hasn’t failed to be among the top 25 players since 2016. He finished seventh in 2017 and second in 2018.

The player said that he often plays big-stakes tournaments thus getting an edge over his opponents. Still, he gets more chances to make big scores while playing mixed games, pot-limit Omaha, and short deck. Chidwick was confident that he played more big final tables than most players globally.
He began playing live poker tournaments in January 2008. Even so, he started being among the top POY players in the 2010s.
Chidwick revealed that he started taking poker seriously a decade ago. His wife-to-be motivated and supported him to exploit his potential.
Advanced gaming software has helped him improve his performance of late. He added that his defensive posture has helped him beat several tough opponents.

The player led the 2022 PokerGo Tour leaderboard despite topping the Card Player Player of the Year race. He beat pros like Jason Koon and Phil Ivey in the high-stakes point race. His latest POY performance increases his poker career tournament earnings to over $44.9 million, the fourth-highest figure in poker’s history.

2022 started on a slow note for Chidwick since he reached two final tables in January and February. He finished fourth in the $25,000 buy-in at the PokerGO Cup and finished fifth in the $15,000 buy-in Stairway To Millions Event.
Chidwick had a tight schedule in March when he reached five final tables and won the first title run in 2022. He won $86,590 and garnered 240 POY points when he won the €5,200 buy-in no-limit hold’em six-max tournament at the European Poker Tour Prague festival. Still, he finished sixth with $95,000 in the $50,000 no-limit hold ’em tournament and fourth with $231,000 in the Super High Roller Series Europe’s $50,000 short deck tournament.
