Sports Legends Challenge Postponed to 2010

The Sports Legends Challenge was set to begin on the 14th of September and continue to the 17th at Atlantis Paradise Island in the Bahamas. Several poker pros and sports legends were set to arrive in the Bahamas and compete in the challenge along with online qualifiers and those who paid the high ticket price to attend the event. Organizers have now decided to reschedule the event and sent out an email announcing the rescheduling to registered players on the 1st of September.

The email sent out on the first told players the event was going to reschedule and relocated to somewhere inside the United States, though specifics have not been released. That email stated that players would be given that information in the next few days. On the 3rd the Sports Legends Challenge official website posted a press release that said the delay of information would be even longer than stated in the email, it will now be a few weeks before information is released on the new location as well as dates and times.

Part of the press release read:

“While the decision to reschedule the inaugural event was not an easy one, “ commented Bruce Bibbero, Sports Legends Challenge CEO, “There is no doubt that it is the best possible decision to help ensure the ultimate success of this amazing concept.”

The reaction from sponsors, partners, Sports Legends, Poker Pros and participants has been almost universally supportive.

“We are pleased with the response,” Bibbero continued, “Change is never easy, but virtually everyone associated with the event recognizes that the first priority is to preserve the essence of the concept – poker and sports fans enjoying unprecedented interaction with their sports and poker heroes.”

While at the moment details on the new venue and dates are being finalized, organizers have indicated that the venue will be one that provides easy access to major population centers

and that certain enhancements to the program are also in the works, for example, including a guaranteed prize pool.

“In addition to the logistical changes, it is also an opportunity to respond to specific input from the poker world,” said Sports Legends Challenge President, Larry Lubin.  “In discussions with players and Poker Pros around the world, it became clear that adding a guaranteed prize pool will be a major step forward.”

Organizers have also stated that those who purchased seats to the event as well as those who earned a seat via qualifier will be able to attend the event once it is rescheduled. However information has not been released on players being reimbursed if they do not want to wait for rescheduling. It will be interesting to see where the tournament will be moved to as well as when. Hopefully it will be sooner than later.
