Resolution Introduced to Fight Restoration of America’s Wire Act

pennsylvania_state_sealBack in March, US Senator Lindsey Graham and Congressman Jason Chaffetz introduced a new bill into legislation that would stop online gambling from taking place in the US. The Restoration of America’s Wire Act would see the Wire Act restored to its former glory, disallowing online gaming from taking place. In 2011, the DoJ ruled that the act only applied to online sports betting. With the RAWA, Graham and Chaffetz, along with backer Sheldon Adelson, want to see every form of Internet gambling unavailable to the American public.

When the US Department of Justice made these changes to the Wire Act, individual states began to legalize and regulate online gambling options. Currently, Delaware, New Jersey and Nevada offer such gaming. These states, as well as those who are currently working on legislation, would be affected by the passage of the Restoration of America’s Wire Act.

In Pennsylvania, State Representative Mike Sturla has introduced a new piece of legislation that will combat the RAWA, according to PokerNewsDaily. Sturla has introduced the House Resolution 1095 to the state General Assembly. This new resolution will help to encourage US officials to not give in to the pressures of Adelson and those who are against online gambling in the states.

Sturla and the co-sponsors of the resolution want Congress to see the pitfalls of falling for such legislation as RAWA. Sturla stated that with a Federal prohibition towards online gaming, Pennsylvania would be ‘directly and negatively’ impacted. The potential for future online gaming would be eliminated, which would be a loss of tax revenues, economic and employment development.

Sturla further stated that the prohibition of online gambling would ‘preclude the Commonwealth’s ability to create a legitimate online poker industry within its borders, drive illegal operators out of business and protect consumers’. The PPA is also in support of Sturla, with John Pappas recently stating that the Pennsylvania government officials have stated they want the opportunity to license and regulate online gambling if they so choose. Sturla’s resolution, if passed, would ensure that this can actually take place.
