PokerStars Online Gaming Application Earns Two Year Suspension in New Jersey

PokerStars LogoFor quite some time, top online poker provider PokerStars, has been trying to get back into the United States. The operator has tried to get their foot in the new online gambling market working in the state of New Jersey to no avail. PokerStars was slated to earn a gaming license but when November 26th arrived, the operator was not live in the state. Now we have learned that the application submitted by PokerStars in the state of New Jersey has now been suspended for a two year time frame by the Division of Gaming Enforcement.

According to a recent report by Forbes, The Division of Gaming Enforcement decided to suspend the application due to the fact that there are still unresolved issues with a federal indictment against Isai Scheinberg, the head of the company. PokerStars is still associated with Scheinberg, who has yet to come to the US for the charges he faces, in particularly allegedly violating the UIGEA and The Illegal Gambling Business Act.

With this decision by the DGE, the company will now be blocked from providing online gaming in the state. However, they will still have the option of renewing their gaming application. This move by the Division of Gaming Enforcement is a big downer for gamers and an even larger setback for the company. However, with the door open for the company to renew their application, under specific circumstances, the company may still have a shot of getting back into the United States.

According to the article, the Division has stated that they may consider a ‘request for relief’ which would reactivate the application if the company is able to show significantly changed circumstances. This would cause the DGE to resume the assessment of the company.

A spokesman for PokerStars, Eric Hollreiser, commented on the DGE decision by stating: “We are disappointed that the N.J. Division of Gaming Enforcement has suspended the review of our application at this time. We note that the DGE will resume the review of our application if our circumstances change. We will remain in open dialogue with the DGE and will update them on changes in our situation as they occur.”
