A few months ago we brought you a story about a breast cancer victim, Nicole Rowe, who entered the 2009 Borgata Poker Open to earn money to cover living expenses while she was recovering from surgery she would have to have due to suffering from Breast cancer. Rowe played very well in the tournament but was beaten by one person, a man, who entered the women’s only tournament.
Abraham Korotki entered the tournament even though it was for women only. Rowe was heartbroken and upset. Even though she did not win, Rowe’s story was heard and now online poker room PokerStars has stepped up to help the cause of breast cancer. PokerStars is hosting a special charity tournament in honor of Nicole Rowe.
The tournament is called the Bad Beat Poker Challenge and will take place on Thursday November 12th at 9pm EST. the buy-in for the event will be $10 and re-buys will be available throughout the first two levels for $10. All proceeds from the online tournament will benefit the Prevent Cancer Foundation. This foundation is a nonprofit group that helps educates women on prevention and early cancer detection.
Several poker pros have donated prizes for those participating in the tournament. Jamie Gold, Daniel Negreanu, Vanessa Rousso, Joe Sebok, Phil Gordon, Gavin Smith, Tom McEvoy, Matt Glantz, UFC start Tito Ortiz and the entire cast of 2 Months, 2 Million have all donated prizes.
The first place prize of the tournament is a 2 Months, 2 Million scholarship which includes a lifetime subscription to the Deucescracked training site. This subscription is worth $10,000. A ticket to a taping of the PokerStars Million Dollar Challenge, night of drinks with the PokerRoad crew, and one on one coaching sessions from poker pros are all up for grabs.
Players can participate in the event by going under the Private Tournament section at PokerStars website. A direct donation can also be given for those who want to donate to the cause.
