Poker Player Commits Suicide after Losing over $500K

Alessandro BastianoniPoker players who go through the ultimate grind at the professional level know that the game has its ups and downs. Players might be up one week and down the next, sometimes with large amounts of money won or lost. This is of course expected and players learn how to deal with the highs and lows of the game.

Unfortunately, as a recent report by The Republic would later reveal, shows the unfortunate and “darker” lows of the game. The local Peruvian paper recently reported that Italian poker player Alessandro Bastianoni was found dead in his apartment this week. The poker pro has apparently killed himself after losing a large amount of cash in two poker events.

The Republic reported that Bastianoni was found in his home after his girlfriend Yeinni Ospina had reported that she had not heard from him in days. Ospina last heard from Bastianoni on July 6th. On this day, the poker pro had told his girlfriend that he had lost a great deal of money and she felt that his voice held ‘deep sadness’. She encouraged him but it did not seem to work.

Bastianoni had competed in the Latin Series of Poker 2013 and then competed in the PokerStars of Lima event. Authorities visited Bastianoni’s luxury apartment which was located in Miraflores, Peru. The poker pro was found dead, lying on the floor, with a briefcase nearby his body. The briefcase held $140,000 and had a letter that Bastianoni had written that asked for the money to be used for his cremation.

Also found next to bastianoni was a glass object which held poison gas and waste water. The medical examiner stated that it appeared as though Bastianoni had passed away some ten days earlier. If not for his girlfriend searching for him, Bastianoni may not have been found for many more days.
