Online Gaming Hearing Scheduled for Today in Pennsylvania

pennsylvania_state_sealInternet gaming is on the agenda in the state of Pennsylvania today as the House of Representatives Democratic Policy Committee is scheduled to hold a public hearing to discuss the option. The committee was created by the Democrats of the State House to serve as a catalyst to enacting policy initiatives that are put forth by the House Democratic Caucus.

Several officials should be in attendance during the meeting including Chair of the Committee and State Representative Mike Sturla as well as Co-Chair and Representative Rosita Youngblood. Tina Davis, the House Gaming Oversight Committee Chairwoman will also be attending as the meeting kicks off at 10:00 am this morning.

According to a PokerNewsDaily report, the agenda of the hearing will start with the welcoming and opening remarks. The first speakers will be discussing the Policy and Regulatory issues and this panel will include Kevin O’Toole, the Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board and James Kilsby, the Managing Director Americas, GamblingCompliance.

The second panel will discuss the social impact issues of offering online gaming and will include such speakers as Keith Whyte, the Executive Director of the National Council on Problem Gambling and Jim Pappas, the Executive Director from the Council on Compulsive Gambling of Pennsylvania.

The third panel will then discuss technology and consumer protection and will end with a panel on gaming industry issues. If the hearing closes as scheduled, the closing remarks will begin at 12:30pm. Essentially, the state must consider internet gaming as they have competition from both Delaware and New Jersey. To maintain a player base, the state will want to consider the option, as the current state gaming industry is threatened by the gaming potential in the state of New Jersey, not to mention Delaware. Gamblers can easily travel to the neighboring states to take part in standard casino gaming as well as online play. It will be interesting to see the outcome of the hearing as well as where the state decides to go with the option of online gambling.
