Online Gambling Legalization in Pennsylvania Pushed Back Until This Fall

pennsylvania_state_sealLast night, information surfaced on the state of Pennsylvania in regards to online gambling. For months now, the state has been trying to find a way to meet a budget shortfall with the option to legalize online poker and casino gaming in the mix. It has now been reported that the state will be relying on the revenues from online gaming but will not be voting on the matter until this fall.

The Associated Press was one news outlet covering the subject last night, with comments from Senate Appropriations Chairman Patrick Browne. Browne was able to comment on the subject of a gambling expansion which would include internet gaming. In the AP report, Browne was quoted as stating that legislation to make Pennsylvania the 4th state to offer casino-style gambling will wait until the fall. However, the option will be counted on to provide as much as $100 million for the state treasury.

Online gambling regulation in the state is part of a larger reform package for gambling that would provide the much-needed revenues for a spending bill that passed into law this past Monday. Part of the negotiations include tax increases.

It has been estimated that once Pennsylvania begins to offer online gaming options and the market matures, as much as $300 million could be generated each year. This would provide 10% more than the casino gambling market that already exists within the state.

For now, gamblers will have to wait and see what happens in the fall, though there is no set time frame as to actually when that will be for legislators of the state. However, it does seem that Pennsylvania is poised to be the next state to begin offering online gambling options and players have been waiting several years to see another state join Delaware, New Jersey and Nevada in offering iGaming action.
