The Lucky Star Casino is a tribal owned gambling facility located in Concho, Oklahoma. The casino is owned by the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes who recently created a new online poker site called pokertribes.com. The tribes were planning on using the online poker site to allow for international game play. However the United States Department of the Interior stepped in and put a stop to the website. The tribes have now filed a lawsuit against members of the Interior.
A recent report by The Oklahoman sheds light on the subject. The tribes were given permission by the state to be able to offer the online poker option, stated clearly in the gaming compact. However, in December, the US Department of the interior put a stop to the online poker site.
The tribes have now filed a lawsuit which names Sally Jewell and Kevin Washburn, the Secretary of the Interior and the Assistant Secretary of Indian Affairs, respectively. The website currently has a status of ‘inactive’ and the tribes are hoping the lawsuit will see a judge rule in their favor, allowing the website to offer gaming to international players.
The tribe is represented by attorney Richard Grellner, who has stated the case is groundbreaking. Grellner stated that the state has a Native American culture that can sell to the world with the state of Oklahoma and the tribes benefiting.
The current agreement between the state and the tribe says that iGaming can be offered to international players from tribal lands. It has been estimated that $132 million could be made each year with the tribes offering online gaming.
According to the compact between the state and the tribe, 4% of the first $10 million earned in annual revenues would go toward the state, from electronic gaming. The state would then earn 5% of the next $10 million and then 6% of the next amounts annually.
