By now anyone following the online gambling industry in the state of New Jersey has realized that the state is doing quite well. Just a short time ago the state pushed past the 100,000 mark for online gaming accounts and now there are four operators offering mobile gaming options. The state has moved rapidly moved to the top spot in the US internet gambling industry and included in the mix is the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa.
The Borgata located in Atlantic City has long provided brick and mortar gaming options and of course is now offering online gaming as well. The Borgata gaming sites have seen over 20,000 accounts created and the Chief Operating Officer and President of the Borgata, Tom Ballance, recently discussed his thoughts about the blossoming industry.
Ballance was interviewed by CNBC as part of the Squawk Box when he stated that New Jersey online gaming had far exceeded expectations. Ballance stated that the Borgata was in a unique position to be at the forefront of the industry as made possibly by their managing partner, Boyd Gaming Corporation. Boyd created a strategy of engaging in nationwide gaming and they already had a service provider, unlike other operators, they were ready to go.
While many brick and mortar operators felt as though internet gambling would threaten the livelihood of land based gaming, Ballance says this is not the case. In the interview, Ballance stated that internet gaming is not a threat to the brick and mortar casinos as information suggests online gamblers are a different type of customer.
According to Ballance, when the databases are matched up, the majority of players who go online are not common customers of the Borgata. It has been more than a year since online players have set foot inside the casino. Ballance also stated that the majority of the online players are male.
The other argument with online game play is that gambling will become more of a problem because access is so easy. Ballance does not agree, stating that online game play provides more controls for operators since players are not allowed to extend their credit and the account must be funded via a credit card or checking account. The interview is definitely an inside look at the gaming landscape as according to one operator who is doing quite well at the moment.
