The site reports that a member of iGaming sent out an email which shows the fake email scam. Criminals have created a fake email that appears to be from Neteller. The email uses the term Neteller.net and states the site will shut down on January 31st. There is a Click Here option and when a recipient of the email clicks the option a new website will appear.
This website will ask for login details which includes credit card information. According to the report by iGaming, there have been several people who have lost money due to the fake email account. With the information provided to the fake Neteller site, the criminals will have access to what they need to remove funds from the consumers accounts.
The email easily passes off for an official email from Neteller as it looks very professional and has the Facebook and Twitter account links for Neteller. However, the email does use Neteller.Net instead of Neteller.com, which is the proper link. Yet most people do not notice this small difference when receiving the email.
It was suggested by iGaming that the email was sent to try and take advantage of players who were subject to the recent announcement by Skrill. Skrill had just announced that Canadian accounts were to be closed and those who received the Neteller (fake) email would think this was taking place as well. Canadian players were not the only target with the fake email as every user of Neteller was sent out the email.
A request has been sent by Neteller to have the fake domain deleted. This is not an action that will happen quickly so players need to be aware of the false email so that they can avoid losing any funds. The email was sent out on January 26th at o6.00 CET so players can be aware if they received this email.
