After seeing several Million Dollar Sunday tournaments never reaching the million dollar mark, the Winning Poker Network has been forced to cut the Million Dollar Sunday events. The website has not made an official announcement but according to numerous reports, the WPN has cut the guarantee of one million dollars in half, to $500,000. The promotion will be extended to last for an additional two weeks, which will keep the money offered at $2 million in total prize money.
The Winning Poker Network includes several poker rooms such as Americas Cardroom and True Poker. The network has continued to struggle over the past few months, being subject to several Distributed Denial of Service attacks, the first coming when the first Million Dollar Sunday was hosted. The attacks actually started before the event, weeks in advance, and stopped, so the WPN thought they were in the clear. However, the attacker was just biding time and ended up hitting the network when the event began.
Once the attack took place, tables were frozen, players were disconnected and others had trouble registering. The tournament had to be canceled and buy-ins plus fees refunded. The rescheduled tournament took place in February with success. The network then decided to run even more of the Million Dollar Sundays with five scheduled for this fall. In September, the events began again and so did the attacks.
In October, the first event took place without incident. However, despite the break in attack, the network still did not come close to making the guaranteed prize pool. The overall in October was just over $197,000 while September had an overlay of $224,500. Just last Sunday, the network had to cough up close to $150,000 to meet the guarantee. Some blame the DDoS attacks, believing that players are not logging on to the network in fear of losing out on their buy-in or the chance to compete.
With the change in guaranteed prize money, players will still be able to compete for the same amount of cash, just over an extended period of time. The Winning Poker Network has also decided to cut the buy-in to $270 with the decreased prize pool.
