Michael Kanaan wins Main Event of 2017 WSOP Sydney

World Series of Poker

The 2017 WSOP Sydney Circuit Main Event recently came to an end with 1,067 players registering to compete. With four starting flights, the field would be narrowed down to 289 by the time Day 2 rolled around. The Star Poker Room played host to the event, with several regulars on hand to compete. Every player wanted to make it at least to the top five spots to earn a larger payday. In the end, it would be Michael Kanaan who earned the first-place finish, taking home just over $394,000 for his efforts.

By the end of Day 2, the field was narrowed down to just 30 players and by Day 3, the final table was named.  After a few hours of play, only three would remain. Michael Kanaan would hold 16,000,000, far more than his other two competitors, John Pachos and Micahel Frasesr, who held 6,120,000 and 8,780,000 respectively.

It wouldn’t be long before Michael Kanaan would be the short stack, after John Pachos doubled up off a hand and Fraser would earn a few as well. It would be three more hours before Pachos would be all-in with 10-9 on a flop of Q-3-10. Fraser would call with Q-7 and would hold the higher pair to knock Pachos out in third place.

Heads-up action began with Kanaan instantly getting to work grinding down his competitor’s chip stack. After around 30 minutes, Kanaan was in the lead and soon called an all-in by Fraser. On the final hand, Kanaan held A-K diamonds against Fraser’s A-10 off-suit. The board fell K-7-4-8-2 giving Kanaan the hand and the title win.
