For the past few weeks, a new campaign has taken root via social media called Let NY Play and is based on online gambling coming to the state of New York. Across Facebook and Twitter, members would see messages about online gambling for the state and now, according to a New York Times report, it seems as though MGM Resorts International is the driving force behind the new campaign.
The basic idea of the messages across social media stated that players in New York should have access to online poker games since New Jersey players have the option. The campaign is the result of an effort by MGM to try and lobby for the option in New York State. The company already has shown their support of online poker in the state when they supported the legislation that was proposed by John Bonacic, a Senator of the state, which would have created online poker options in New York.
MGM went so far as to commission a study that looked at how much money would be produced with online poker in the state. The study found that New Yorkers wager around $110 million with unlicensed poker games online and with this much wagered, the state has the opportunity to earn anywhere from $50 to $80 million in taxes with regulated and licensed gaming.
MGM has been a strong proponent of online poker gaming and continues to try and gather support for the option when it comes to online game play. Speaking on the subject, Alan Feldman, the Executive Vice President of MGM, stated: “The reality is that poker is the one whose business model is already established and the one that would be the most acceptable and appropriate, certainly from a political point of view.”
The campaign of Let NY Play seems to be gathering steam and already has several thousand followers on Facebook as well as a few hundred on Twitter. It will be interesting to see if New York is able to pass legislation and begin to offer online poker gaming options.
