A British hacker has admitted he stole approximately 400 billion virtual poker chips worth somewhere among $285,000 and $12 million in actual dollars from a popular Facebook Texas Hold’em poker game and then sold some of them for money on Facebook.
Ashley Mitchell gained administrator access towards the Zynga site where he posed as administrator of the company’s Texas Hold ’em poker game accessible through Facebook, according to published reports.
His greed in moving such enormous quantities of chips between June and September of 2009 led to his detection by Zynga’s security team, which then contacted law enforcement, reports say.
When he was caught he had already sold about $86,000 worth of the chips via hijacked
Facebook accounts.
The judge inside the case says Mitchell could face years in prison for the crime, especially since he’d already received a suspended sentence in 2008 for hacking into the Internet site of the town offices of Tobray. In that case he is said to have utilized their systems in order to steal $3,500.
