Gulf Coast World Poker Tournament Champ Comes Way Back

Gulf Caost World Poker Tour TournamentInsert any cliché here you need, “chip and a chair”, “never give up”, there are many that will work. To some that actually saw what happened it is the greatest poker come back in modern day history. No matter where it might fall in the history books, one thing will not change, Bill Elder is the Gulf Coast World Poker Tournament champion and he did it in dramatic fashion.

The Beau Rivage Resort and Casino hosted this WPT weekend event. There was a lot of buzz around the tournament for being right around the time of the Katrina anniversary and the first televised poker event from the Gulf Coast. Day 3 of the event changed the focus though and poker took center stage.

It was Day 3, final table and Elder was facing a $1,000 ante and $4,000/$8,000 in blinds. He was big blind and the problem was he had only 2 $1,000 chips in front of him. In the pot they went and his tournament was in the hands of lady luck. He got two callers who checked it down and Elder tripled up, the next hand he quadrupled up and then after a third consecutive all in, he doubled up again. His measly $2,000 in chips had grown into a powerhouse of $130,000 in just three hands.

Elder knew what to do know, he brought this amazing come back all the way home by winning the inaugural WPT event on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. As the winner of the tournament he received an automatic seat in the upcoming Word Poker Tour Championship, a WPT bracelet and the first place prize pool of $747, 650. Also, it seems, he has a place in the poker history books as well.

The next poker tournament for the WPT circuit will be at the Borgota in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
