The 2020 World Series of Poker has officially wrapped up, and one of the final events was Event #79: $25,000 Heads-Up No-Limit Hold’em. One of the best poker players in the world at the moment, Fedor Holz, managed to showcase his poker prowess once again, taking down this event by defeating Brunno Botteon in the last part of the tournament. Moreover, he faced Sergi Reixach one round before Botteon and managed to win a total of $1,077,025.
Thanks to the staking feature available on GGPoker, part of Holz’s prize was distributed to the community. The staking feature allows kind of “betting” on players and reserving a part of their prize – if they win it.
This win secured the seventh place on the all-time money list for Fedor Holz, according to Hendon Mob. David Peters is the player who was overtaken by Holz. In fact, Peters also managed to achieve huge success in the 2020 WSOP Online and won his second bracelet by taking down Event #54: $10,000 No-Limit Hold’em Heads-up — a tournament that followed the identical format like event #79.
Holz also managed to win his second gold bracelet. His first one came after winning the $111,111 NLHE High Roller for One Drop in 2016.
The German poker professional needed approximately 45 minutes to get past Spain’s Sergi Rexiach, but only needed 15 minutes to defeat Brunno Botteon from Brazil. Therefore, Botteon had to settle for the second place and the consolation prize of $622,300.
Holz’s Path to the Finals
The way this type of tournament works is similar to how many individual sports work. Instead of several players sitting at the same table, heads-up will always match two players only who will engage in a heads-up duel right away. In the first part of the tournament, you need to achieve as many wins as possible before entering the knockout phase when you must win, or you’re out of the game.
The original field for this event consisted of 127 players. After reaching the second part of the event, Holz had to face a tough lineup of players, including Luc Greenwood, Anton Morgenstern, Robert Flink, and George Wolff.
The quarterfinals were a particularly interesting part of the event when Fedor Holz met his arch-enemy, Justin Bonomo. The two players had an epic duel when they met in the heads-up of the $1,000,000 Big One for One Drop back in 2018 when Holz was on the losing side. However, he decided to change that this time, taking all Bonomo’s chips in the process.
According to the top-ten list, Turkey’s Oktay Kahyaoglu and Sergi Reixach both shared the prize of $311,150. Moreover, Jason McConnon, Justin Bonomo, Stuart Wallensteen, and Aaron Van Blarcum all received a share of the prize pool — $194,369 each.
This marked the end of another great heads-up event in which some of the best poker players in the world took part.
