Espen Jorstad is the latest World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event champion. He addressed a swap dispute he has with Alex “Pwndidi” Theologis on August 29 on social media and many renowned poker pros supported him.
A swap is an agreement that two players in a poker tournament make to exchange part of their potential winnings. Jorstad shared some messages in July accusing Theologis of swapping three percent in the WSOP Main Event with him. It ought to have been a $300,000 share before taxes but he didn’t recall where it occurred.
Jorstad won $10 million in the poker tournament and claimed that he lacked records of Theologis’ swap. He added in a long post that they met several times and didn’t swap something else.
Was There a Swap or Not?
Jorstad explained in a post that Theologis sent him Instagram messages inquiring about the swap on July 13, the Main Event’s Day 7. The latter is an experienced online poker player who has cumulatively won $592,840 in WSOP.
Jorstad replied that he didn’t note anything about the swap and asked Theologis if he knew where it occurred. Theologis cursed and said that he expected that to happen after failing to write the swaps in his chat.
He was certain that they swapped three percent at one moment either during dinner, at Wynn, or while on their way. Jorstad replied that that was strange since he had his swaps list and didn’t recall swapping with Theologis.
Jorstad claims that they met at a Las Vegas hotel to discuss the situation and continued the talks on Instagram. He informed Theologis on July 22 that it was clear the swap didn’t occur since none of them remembered where or when it happened.
Theologis replied on July 29 that he felt disappointed and betrayed since he normally swaps with trustworthy players and he didn’t expect getting such an experience from Jorstad. He admitted he had learned a tough lesson and wondered how Jorstad was happy with his claims.
What Prompts Jorstad to Make the Revelations?
Jorstad said that an intoxicated man went to his table last week while playing a meet-up match in Cyprus and shouted that he should pay Theologis his three percent. The player added that violence would occur if he fails to pay Alex. But he didn’t suspect Theologis had a deal with the man.
Instead, Jorstad decided not to take the threat seriously as he didn’t believe Alex was attempting to ruin his reputation. He stated that Theologis might have shared the issue with a few close friends and one of them might have spread it to other people.
Theologis’ Response
Theologis stated in an interview that Jorstad’s description of what transpired was accurate and he is certain that a verbal swap occurred. He added that they spoke several times in summer, while Jorstad was on a Tag Team Event rail and during tournament breaks.
The player said that he reached out to Jorstad several times on Instagram in the Main Event’s early stages and contacted Patrick “Pads” Leonard before the final table about Jorstad’s forgetfulness on the swap. Theologis clarified that the issue began before Jorstad’s victory in the event and he didn’t intend to publicize their dispute.
