Brian Lemke Wins World Series of Poker Event #15

Event #15 of the 2009 WSOP ended early Tuesday morning with Brian Lemke earning the bracelet win. Lemke stated he was inspired to win the event to honor his late cousin, Justin Shronk, the former PokerRoad Radio producer.

When Day three of game play began seventeen players returned to compete for the bracelet win. During the first hour of play two players were eliminated; Nicholas Grippo and Tom Braband. Lemke would knock out Lars Bonding next when Lemke’s pocket queens held up against Bondings A-10.

The eliminations would continue until the final table was set. Lemke was sitting next to last in the chip standings but he would fight his way to the top. After a while a big pot was on the table and two players would be eliminated during the hand. David Pham would go out in tenth and Christian Iacobellis in ninth when they were pitted against David Pham.

Lemke would earn a good stack of chips from Billy Kopp leaving Kopp with very little chips. Shortly after losing most of his chip stack, Kopp would be knocked out by Fabian Quoss in eighth place. Isaac Baron would go out in seventh followed by Danny Illingworth, Lika Gerasimova, Mike Sowers and Thomas Keller which left Brian Lemke and Fabian Quoss in heads up play.

When heads up play began Lemke was down in chips almost 4 to 1 as he had been down most of the day. Lemke was able to pick up a few pots when heads up play began and he managed to double up when he took his A-6 up against Fabians Q-10.

It would take two hours for Lemke to gain the chip lead and on the final hand he would take Quoss down with A-8 against Quoss’s A-Q. Quoss was in the lead on the hand but a Queen on the turn was just what Lemke needed to give him the lead in the hand and the win to earn his first ever gold bracelet.

He dedicated the win to his cousin, Justin Shronk who passed away in April. Lemke was very emotional after his win and during an interview he stated: “He was with me the whole time – the entire time. I know he brought that queen for me. I miss him and that bracelet is dedicated to him, my family, my grandma, and his mom.”
