Atlantic City Casino Operations See Decrease in Gaming Win for August

The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement has released the totals for the month of August in regards to casino gaming win, for both online and land based game play, with the state seeing a 5% decrease when compared to August of last year.

Reports from the DGE show that Atlantic City won a total of $245.8 million from gamblers for August, with online and live game combined. This amount is 4.9% less than the $258.6 million earned in August of 2015. Of the total amount earned, around $229 million came from the land based venues. Just over $16 million was provided by online gambling in the state.

Poker totals were around $4.5 million in gaming wins for August, considering live and online gaming. Slot machine totals in the state brought in $167 million for the month which was 5.3% lower when considering year-on-year. Land based gaming was down 6.7% when considering year-on-year with online gaming actually increasing just over 31% when compared to last year.

When looking at year to date totals, overall gaming revenues came to $1.76 billion through the month of August. This is a 2% increase when compared to last year when $1.73 million was earned. The state’s overall totals may be down even more in the coming months as the Taj Mahal Casino is set to close this October. Atlantic City lost four casinos in 2014 and is set to lose one more this year, bringing the total of casinos down to just seven.

The big winner for the month was the Borgata Casino, who earned $69.3 million for the month, but this was a decrease in earnings by just over 7% when compared to the $74.8 million earned in August of last year. The win amount for the first eight months of the year for the Borgata is actually up, with a percentage of 4.5% when compared to last year with a total of $516.3 million earned.

Additional earnings may be set for the state in the future if the Garden State approves a question on the ballot that will allow casinos to be created in the northern region of the state. Opponents feel the venues would not add to the earnings but take away from existing casinos while proponents of the measure feel the casinos would help the state gain additional revenues.
