Just a few days ago, Representative Peter King introduced a new bill to the House of Representatives that would legalize online gambling to the fullest. Senator Harry Reid, who previously tried to pass online poker legislation and failed, has commented on these recent developments.
Reid spoke with The Sun last Friday and stated that online poker legislation on a federal level would basically never succeed.
“I felt for several months now that I don’t see any movement on this. I don’t see anything happening.”
Reid stated that he felt the new bill proposed by King would make the prospect of a new poker bill bleak as the new bill would authorize basically everything.
Reid further stated that he does not believe the bill will pass since it is so broad. The broad spectrum will divide the sympathies for lawmakers who are for gaming legislation and only give fire to the flame of those who are opposed to the option. Reid stated that the effort is still there for online poker federal legislation but he is not very confident that something will get done.
In other Reid news, apparently the Senate Majority Leader and Frank Fahrenkophf Jr, the Chief Executive Officer of American Gaming Association, are at odds with one another. Both are blaming the other for last year’s online poker legislation failure. Fahrenkopf spoke with Gambling Compliance in an article published last week and stated that the Reid/Kyl bill failure was the ‘biggest disappointment’ of his 18 year career with the AGA.
Fahrenkopf was asked if he blames either Reid or Kyl for the failure and he stated that if he had to place blame on anyone, even though he thinks they did the best they could do, he would say it was a failure that blame is not the right word. He further stated that everyone in the gaming industry looked to the two officials as to how they should proceed with online poker legislation.
Gambling Compliance reached out to Reid’s camp and Kristen Orthman, a spokeswoman for Reid stated that Reid has been ‘totally committed’ to the online poker effort from day one. Orthman came back at Fahrenkopf’s comments by stating: “Perhaps if Mr. Fahrenkopf had spent less time dealing with the presidential debates and more time actually doing his job as head of the gaming association we could have passed the bill.”
