Pennsylvania Senator Pens Letter Urging House of Representatives to Avoid Rush of DFS Regulations

Pennsylvania is one state in the US that has been busy considering online gambling legislation. Along with casino and poker gaming, the state has been considering daily fantasy sports. Now it seems one State Senator is hoping legislators will slow down with the regulation of daily fantasy sports as well as other areas of gaming.

Senator of Pennsylvania Robert Tomlinson wrote a letter to the members of the State House of Representatives, urging them to slow down when it comes to regulation of DFS gaming. Lawmakers in the state have connected daily fantasy sports to an expansion of gambling in Pennsylvania which slowed the progress of the legislation within the state house.

The letter, which was released by OnlinePokerReport, shows Tomlinson asking lawmakers to work on repairing the casino tax issue but waiting in other areas when it comes to gaming. In the letter, Tomlinson stated that given the complexity of the gaming issues and the potential to harm the existing industry, the leaders of the state were smart not to rush into new gaming legislation.

In his statements, Tomlinson is talking about how the Senate decided to pass a measure that will only fix the casino tax problem. The Senate ignored the House version of the measure which had added other expansions to gaming.

When discussing DFS in the letter, Tomlinson states that in regards to legalized fantasy sports, the potential licensure and regulation of the activity is not an issue that is on the front burner. The Senator calls the activity a recreational one and a hobby that friends and family enjoy. Tomlinson points out that the activity will continue with or without state involvement, plus projected revenues are insignificant for the Commonwealth.

Tomlinson further stated that the formal legalization of fantasy sports should be carefully considered as to whether or how the state should license and regulate the activity. Tomlinson feels the main concern should be the business model of the commercial operators.

The state of Pennsylvania is set to continue discussing gaming in 2017 with daily fantasy sports included. We shall see by next year if the state finally passes some type of legislation in regards to online gaming, be it DFS, poker or casino options.
