Pennsylvania Online Gambling Legislation on Hold

Pennsylvania State SealPennsylvania state representative Tina Davis introduced legislation back in April that would have provided online gambling options in the state.

Davis created the legislation so the state could compete with Delaware and New Jersey, neighboring states that have already passed online gambling legislation. However, the proposal has now stalled and movement to offer this option in the state could be pushed back until after 2014.

Representative Tina Pickett, the Leader of the House Committee on Gaming Oversight, spoke with the Cleveland Plain Dealer this week and stated that she would like to wait and see what happens in regards to online gambling options.

Pickett would like to see how well Nevada, Delaware and New Jersey do with online gambling before allowing the option in the state. Pickett does not feel as though the legislation will move forward in this legislative session.

As of right now, the state of Pennsylvania is the number two ranking state in the US gaming market behind the state of Nevada. To be able to maintain their position, the state would need to offer online gambling options as well. The state could lose this status if the state of New Jersey moves forward by offering online gambling options on top of their brick and mortar options.

Like Pickett, many states seem to watching how online gambling affects other states. Many are concerned about profitability as well as if brick and mortar gambling will suffer lower numbers due to the fact that online gambling is more readily available.

Then there are others who are concerned that online gambling will see an increase in gambling addictions because the option would be so available. However, many legislators, including Chris Christie the governor of New Jersey, have made sure amendments exist to cover problem gambling.
