Daily Fantasy Sports Legislation Reaches Governor’s Desk in Ohio

NCAA Football

Currently, eighteen states in the US have signed legislation into law dealing with the daily fantasy sports industry. There may be one new state to add to this list soon, as legislature in Ohio sent a DFS bill to the desk of Governor John Kasich yesterday. H 132 was approved by the Senate last week as an amended version and the House then approved the bill for a second time, sending the measure to Governor Kasich for approval.

Representatives Jonathan Dever and Rob McColley introduced the bill earlier in the year, with the bill quickly moving forward within the House. The Senate made changes and voted to approve the bill with a vote of 24-4 on the 29th of November. The House agreed to the amendments, choosing to send the bill to the Governor yesterday. The House approved the bill the second time with a vote of 86-3.

The legislation gives the Ohio Casino Control Commission the authority to regulate the contests of daily fantasy sports operators, with the ability to license, investigate and penalize operators as well. Players must be 18 years or older to take part in contests. Operators of DFS will need to obtain a license for three years which can cost as much as $10,000 a year. The language of the bill has prohibited the contests from being based on sports associated with colleges, high school and youth activities.

The Governor has been asked by several news outlets for a comment on whether or not he will be signing the measure and has yet to state either way. With so many states already involved in the DFS industry, it would not be a far stretch to see the Governor sign the bill into law. So for now, we wait and see what Governor Kasich decides and if Ohio will become the next state to legalize DFS contests in the US.
