The World Series of Poker offers many events for players to compete in, with buyins ranging from $1k to $50k. Amateur players who want to compete in a variety of events or even one certain event, has to save a great deal of money to be able to compete, pay for their stay, travel expenses and dining.
Players who manage to earn a seat via a satellite can save some money but a trip to Las Vegas can still cost thousands of dollars. A new report has just surfaced stating that one player may have nixed saving and just stolen from a casino instead to pay for a WSOP entry.
The player in question is Troy Wilcoxon, who competed in the first event of the 2013 WSOP, the $500 Casino Employee Event. Wilcoxon was able to place 11th in the event, outlasting over 880 players to cash for $5,010. However, the player is now being accused of stealing funds from the Lancer Lanes Casino located in Clarkston, Washington, and possibly using the funds to pay for his trip to Las Vegas.
Back in May, over $25,000 was stolen from the Lancer Lanes Casino and Wilcoxon and his friend James Nollette are now facing charges for the crime. The pair face burglary, money laundering and theft charges that have been handed down by the Asotin County Superior Court. Richard Muszynski, a police detective in Clarkston commented on the case stating:
“There’s a good chance, but we do not know whether proceeds of the casino heist covered Wilcoxon’s tournament fee and eight day stay at the Rio All-Suites Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.”
The detective went on to state that the casino robbery showed no forced entry and the event seemed to have been conducted by someone who knew the business. Investigators found that Wilcoxon owes close to $15,000 in debts and was reported to have went to Las Vegas with Nollette to compete in the event.
Police are now investigating as to where the money has turned up from the casino burglary. Detectives were able to track a small amount near the vicinity of the casino and then waited to speak with Wilcoxon when he returned from Vegas. According to police reports, the player bragged about placing 11th in the Employee event and denied that he had anything to do with the casino robbery.
