The Nevada Gaming Control Board Backs Station Casinos’ Gaming License Application
The Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB) monitors all gaming activities in the state. It recently supported Station Casinos’ gaming license application.
Red Rock Resorts Inc. owns the gaming property. The Board’s proposed approval involved validating officers and executives for Station Casinos’ Durando Casino & Resort in Southwest Las Vegas.
The Unexpected NGCB Approval
The Culinary Union’s representatives accused the Station Casinos of using MUD lists entailing the names of workers who were laid-off for supporting unions or the management. They appealed the casino’s application since some workers weren’t aware of which side to support. Yet, reports indicate that it used the lists to hire staff at its Station and Wildfire stations.
The Culinary Union 226 representatives appeared before the NGCB in the 30-minute public hearing that the board had added to its schedule. Some of them stated that MUD lists contain 2,261 union employees whom Station Casinos haven’t recalled since laying them off in 2020.
Even so, they asked Board members to request Red Rock’s President, Scott Kreeger about their work practices as they condemned the casino’s officials. But, some of the management’s supporters asked the Board to acknowledge the gaming operator’s commendable treatment of its staff. Some of the NGCB’s suggestions will be considered before the Nevada Gaming Commission gives the final validation on September 21, 2023.
Kreeger, Senior Vice Presidents; Jeffrey Welch and Stephen Cootey applied for licenses as essential staff for several Station properties including Durango that they will launch on November 20, 2023.
NGCB comprises three members and it didn’t inquire on the MUD lists or employment practices in the latest hearing. The Board’s Chairman, Kirk Hendrick stated after the public comment session that Nevada’s open meeting regulation bars them from addressing issues that people forward in public hearings.
The National Labor Relations Board has the mandate to solve disagreements between management and the union. Therefore, it would be unlawful for the NGCB to intervene in Station management and the Culinary Union’s dispute.
Other Approvals from the NGCB
The NGCB suggested the approval of a few extra Station Casinos’ requests. They included the licensing of Durango’s bookie and three high-end gaming parlors for high-stakers at the casino.
Station Casinos recently promoted one of its longtime employees in December 2022 to Durango’s general manager. David Horn got the promotion and informed the NGCB that the casino has hired 500 workers and will soon hire 1,200 more once it broadens its gaming portfolio.
The Board recommended that the casino should be allowed to run gaming lounges at Spa and Casinos, and Green Valley Ranch Resort. It plans to complete the lounges’ renovation project by November 9 intending to offer high-rollers an opportunity to players at a secure room that is detached from the primary casino. Nevertheless, the Board also backed Station’s request to operate the El Cortez bookmaker in Las Vegas.
