Station Casinos to Develop New Casino Project in Downtown Las Vegas

Station Casinos is planning a new locals-focused location on Fremont Street east of downtown Las Vegas. The proposal is for a 21,500-square-foot gaming establishment just south of Charleston Boulevard. The new Wildfire Casino is expected to include a restaurant and tavern.

Station Looks to Increase Vegas Footprint

The company probably wants its latest project to be similar in size and scope to the Wildfire Casino property it already runs on Rancho Drive. It’s located about two miles south of the North Las Vegas Airport and has a sportsbook as well as a restaurant and casino with some 155 slots. The city commissioners must now endorse the project, which has already received staff approval from the Las Vegas Planning Commission.

The company is also close to starting construction on its Durango project. This casino is coming, despite backlash in the area from a campaign that the Culinary Union is still leading.

Nevada’s leading casino labor union has fought Station and its Red Rock Resorts parent for years. This results from continued opposition of Red Rock’s (and Station’s) owners, Frank III and Lorenzo Fertitta, to recognize unionized workforces at their casinos in the Las Vegas Valley.

Frank Fertitta, the CEO of Red Rock Resorts, reports that the proposed Station Casino Durango venue will be built in two stages on 50 acres of land. It will feature a two-tower hotel with 452 rooms with restaurants and a 93,000-square-foot casino.

Station Enters “Development Mode”

Station Casinos, which trades as Red Rock Resorts Incorporated, owns and operates ten Wildfire restaurant gaming establishments in the Las Vegas area. However, unlike most casino operators in Las Vegas, the company owns about 315 acres of land in Clark County that is being held for future gambling-friendly projects.

Lorenzo Fertitta, who serves as Vice-Chairman for Red Rock Resorts, recently declared that he likes the idea of doubling the size of the current operating platform in Las Vegas by developing those properties. He also stated that the firm is currently in a ‘development mode’ despite recently selling about 90 acres near Reno to a warehouse developer for $32.6 million.

Frank Fertitta added, “We’re going to continue to look at each one of the development sites here in Las Vegas as we roll forward and try to build out the portfolio and double the footprint here in Las Vegas.”

After selling The Palms to the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians for $650 million in May, Station is now trying to make a return to targeting Nevada locals. The company has already made commitments to Durango and is seeking approval for a Wildfire gaming tavern in Downtown Vegas. This is proving to accurately reflect its owners’ remarks during Red Rock’s November third-quarter earnings call.

In a recent investor conference, Frank Fertitta said that the company is currently in development mode. Station now has six pieces of undeveloped property and wants to double the size of its existing operating footprint in Las Vegas.
