Sheldon Adelson Passes Away at the Age of 87

Sheldon Adelson, the multi-billionaire and founder of Las Vegas Sands, passed away at 87.

Last week, Adelson had to take a leave of absence from his job to get cancer treatment, as he was suffering from non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

However, it seems that he didn’t pass away from cancer, but rather than complications related to the treatment, as stated in the official statement released by his company.

Apart from one of the most successful gambling companies, Sheldon also left a huge family behind him. He had a total of six children and 11 grandchildren. He also left behind his wife, Dr. Miriam Adelson, who married him back in 1991.

In a short statement, his wife said that he was “utterly irreplaceable” to her, his children and grandchildren, and to his many friends, admirers, employees, and colleagues.

Adelson’s Amazing Career

Sarah and Arthur, Adelson’s immigrant parents, noticed that their son showed great signs of a talent for business from an early age. He wanted to make money by selling newspapers, candy vending machines, toiletries, and more. He was into all kinds of businesses before he entered the world of gambling.

Adelson managed to buy his first casino in the 1980s, naming it Sands Hotel and Casino. In that very lot, Adelson would later open The Venetian after being inspired by his visit to Venice on his honeymoon.

Sands became a publicly-traded company in 2004, and Adelson had a net worth of $35.1 billion in March 2019, as stated in Forbes.

He never ceased to grow his casino empire, setting his foot in the other big casino center of the world — Macau, where he opened Sands Macao building. Sands also operated the legendary Marina Bay building in Singapore.

Being one of the wealthiest people on the planet, Adelson also funded many political campaigns. He was a Democrat at first but then became one of the biggest donors to the Republican party. He supported George W. Bush’s re-election campaign in 2004 and Mitt Romney’s failed attempt.

Sheldon also supported Donald Trump and his campaigns, becoming one of the biggest political donors, as claimed by the Center for Responsive Politics.

Another thing that many online casino and poker platforms will remember Adelson for is his Coalition to Stop Internet gambling. He called online poker “a threat to our society” and believed that online gambling was “fool’s gold.” He even supported anti-poker legislation back in 2014 that wanted to prohibit all internet gambling.

His final goal was to restore the Wire Act and apply it to online gambling. Adelson had strong ties to Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, who managed to put the legislative piece in front of the US House and US Senate. However, the legislation failed to pass past committee.

Adelson was a man of action, leading his huge empire until his very last breath.
