Riviera quietly closed its six table poker room on Monday. This was confirmed by staff at Riviera, as well as the poker room’s Facebook page. There is no word on whether the dealers and management of the room were laid off or were transferred to another department within the casino.
Riviera’s poker room was one of the quietest on the Las Vegas Strip. It rarely offered more than two games at any given time and it was often completely dark. The most common game was $1/$3 No Limit Texas Hold’em. There was an occasional fixed limit game and a $2-$20 spread limit game. Riviera also offered four daily tournaments, though many failed to get off the ground.
Riviera was offering poker players a free weekday room for every six hours played between late May and July 15th. This was done in an attempt to lure players visiting Las Vegas for the summer poker season. This promotion was apparently not successful and is no longer available due to the poker room’s closure.
This closure comes after the news that there will be two new poker rooms opening in the next month in Las Vegas. The Plaza, located at Main and Fremont downtown, will open a three table poker room using electronic PokerPro machines. The LVH, formerly known has the Las Vegas Hilton, will open a five table live poker room that will be close enough for Riviera guests to walk. Riviera guests may also choose to play poker at Circus Circus, which is directly across Las Vegas Boulevard.
Riviera is struggling and quickly burning through cash. Two executives left the company last week and it is posting large losses every quarter. This was covered in a 4Flush article published last week.
