The casinos in the state of Maryland are doing quite well, having seen year-over-year totals continuing to increase for ten months running. The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency has reported today that the state’s casinos were able to earn over $97 million for the month of September, which is an 11% increase from the same month last year.
September was actually the strongest month for the gaming venues in the state since this past April. Revenues were down from August, when the state pushed past the $100 million mark, but the overall totals are still high when compared to revenues last year. The increase for September is attributed to gaming at the Horseshoe Casino Baltimore, a venue that experienced an increase in gaming of just over 21%, bringing in $26.9 million.
Maryland Live Casino also saw an increase in gaming revenues, earning 8.8% more than September 2015 with $53.9 million in earnings. The second highest growth in revenues though, goes to the Rocky Gap Casino Resort. Rocky Gap was able to see an almost 15% increase in casino revenue earnings from last year, at $4.4 million.
A much smaller increase occurred at the Casino at Ocean Downs where $5.9 million was earned. Ocean Downs was up only 3% from last year. While four out of five casinos in the state saw revenue gains, one still seems to be struggling. Hollywood Casino Perryville saw revenues decline once again, which marks the fifth month running that the casino has seen a decrease in earnings. For September, the gaming venue brought in $5.9 million which is a 4.6% decrease.
The state is also preparing for a new venue to open this December. On the 8th of the month, the MGM National Harbor should open its doors. It will be interesting to see how the revenues play out once the new gaming venue is open. Will players visit the newer casino over old favorites or will MGM National Harbor simply contribute more to the overall win of the state in regards to casino revenues?
