The coronavirus outbreak that befell the world impacted various industries, as many businesses had to shut down for some time. One of the most impacted industries is gambling, as virtually all casinos and poker rooms in the world had to close their doors to visitors for some time.
That’s why the land-based casino industry was non-existent for a couple of months. All poker players who wanted to play their favorite card game had to do it online. However, it’s time for them to return to live poker rooms as many casinos around the globe are now returning to business.
It won’t be business as usual, though. The pandemic is nowhere near the end, so many land-based properties are opening back up while taking precautionary measures to stop the spread of the virus and respect social distancing guidelines. Therefore, staff and poker will have to adhere to the rules, which are different depending on which part of the world you’re in.
King’s Resort Opens Its Doors
The first big poker room to reopen its doors is King’s Resort in Rozvadov, Czech Republic. This is the biggest casino and poker room in Europe, and it attracts thousands of players not only from Europe, but from the entire world. The first tournament was already hosted, and there are plans for tournaments all summer long.
US Casinos Reopen
Many US casinos started operating once again, but only a couple started their poker operations as well. The first ones to reopen were casinos in Florida that started running late May. One of the most important pieces of news from this area is that The Seminole Hard Rock Tampa announced poker tournaments would resume on June 23.
Casinos in Las Vegas, as well as the entire state of Nevada, reopened their doors on June 4, as three poker rooms started offering cash games once again — The Venetian Poker Room, the Orleans Poker Room, and the South Point Poker Room. Three additional rooms reopened in Vegas on June 18 — Bellagio, Caesars Palace, and Sahara. The Venetian even held a multi-table tournament on June 19 an 20.
Although poker rooms around the globe started offering small live poker tournaments, there is still no news about any of the major tournaments getting back to poker rooms. So far, WSOP, WPT, and others are still available online.
These large-scale tournaments attract thousands of players and can be potentially dangerous for the spread of the coronavirus. Moreover, they attract players from all over the world, so as long as there are travel restrictions, it would be difficult to make serious plans about them.
The only piece of news we have about big tournaments is that WSOP is postponed for fall 2020. However, no concrete dates have been given so far. In the meantime, all we can do is stay up-to-date on the news and hope that the coronavirus pandemic ends as soon as possible.
