Grand Island in Nebraska Is Ready to Expand Gaming

Grand Island is on the road to add more games to its offering. The casino operating in Fonner Park, Nebraska, is ready to hit the next tier. In fact, the gaming expansion at the casino could happen in less than two weeks.

This would mean access to roulette, crap, and blackjack games at the casino. The operator has already written to the state’s gambling regulators to gain approval for its plans to offer table games. Alongside this ask is another ask to offer sports betting.

Nebraska expanded gaming through a ballot vote in 2020. This led to the launch of temporary casinos, including Grand Island, Horsemen’s Park in Omaha, Lincoln Racecourse in Lincoln, Atokad in South Sioux City, and Harrah’s racetrack and casino in Columbus.

One Step Away from Expanded Gaming

Grand Island Independent reported Grand Island Casino and Resort had petitioned the Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission for a permit to expand gaming. The gambling regulator is scheduled to meet on August 18, 2023. If the commissioners approve Grand Island’s petition, the casino can begin offering table games the same day.

The casino plans to add at least one roulette table, a craps table, and a Texas Hold’em table. In addition, there will be five blackjack tables.
This is not the only gaming expansion expected at Grand Island Casino and Resort. The operator plans to add more slot machines, bringing the total count to slightly over 330.

Sports fans will be happy to know that Grand Island Casino might be adding a sportsbook too. The launch might come in time for college games.

Expanding gaming offerings could mean more visitors to the casino. Fortunately, the property will add other amenities to serve additional visitors.

The casino’s general manager, Vince Fiala, told Grand Island Independent the casino would have more dining options. The expansion will also come with more entertainment venues for live events.

Vince also said they would install a restroom near the gaming floor. This will prevent players from leaving the casino floor and passing through security whenever they want to use a room.

This expansion is happening at the temporary location of the Grand Island Casino. The construction of the permanent structure is still underway.

Expanding gaming at the casino is mutually beneficial to Nebraska and the casino operator. The state will receive more tax revenue, and the casino will earn more.

Glory Days Ahead of Nebraska

Grand Island is choosing a prime time to expand its offering. If the casino launches a sportsbook, it will be the second in the state. The sportsbook will also launch slightly before the collegiate American football season kicks off.

The first sportsbook in Nebraska launched in June. It is located in the WarHorse Casino in Lincoln.

Nebraska’s gaming industry is doing well. The state collected $1.36 million in taxes from three temporary casinos in June.

This figure includes the tax collected from sports betting for nine days at WarHorse casino. With a second sportsbook coming soon and new table games at Grand Island Casino, the gaming tax revenue could hit $2 million in a few months.
