Casino Robbery Suspect Caught Ten Years after Crime Committed

Edmund Osei has been on the run for ten years and now he has finally been captured. Osei is a former Atlantic City casino dealer and he was charged with armed robbery at five different casinos as well as a bank ten years ago. Osei disappeared before an arraignment in 2000 and has been on the run every since. Osei was captured by the Scotland Yard in Accra North, Ghana.

Back in the summer of 1999, Osei was accused of taking $60,000 from casinos and a bank during a robbery spree. Osei once worked as a poker dealer at the Trump Taj Mahal and was very familiar with casinos and how they work.  On one robbery of a casino Osei approached a teller with a toy gun and told her to “Shut up, give me all your hundreds. Do you want to die?” The largest amount Osei was said to get during one hold up was $30,500 which occurred on June 11th 1999.

Osei was supposed to appear for an arraignment in January 2000 and failed to show.  The FBI has been searching for Osei for ten years and they asked the Scotland Yard to track down the thirty two year old fugitive in April as he was found in Ghana. The fugitive was not arrested until last week. Ghanaian police arrested Osei after what officials are calling a diplomatic process.

Even though he has been captured it is unclear as to when he will be returned to the United States. When he was apprehended it was without incident and on an FBI warrant which charged him with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

Weysan Dun a special agent in charge of the FBI’s Newark Office commented: “There aren’t many better examples of international law enforcement cooperation than this. The grasp of justice around Mr. Osei got tighter and tighter until he couldn’t escape.”
