Casino Gambling Expansion a No-Go in Massachusetts and New Jersey

Yesterday, two states saw an overwhelming NO vote in regards to ballot measures that would have seen casino gambling expansions take place. Both Massachusetts and New Jersey voters chose not to see gambling options change within their respective states.

In Massachusetts, voters rejected a plan for a second slots parlor to be created in the state by Eugene McCain, most likely to have been placed in the Revere area. The new venue would have been close to Suffolk Downs, a racing facility that was not in favor of the measure. The law in the state will remain the same and allow only three casinos and one slots parlor to be located within Massachusetts. The margin of rejection for the proposal was 69 to 31 percent.

In New Jersey, the majority of voters choose NO when it came to the subject of adding two new casinos in the northern region of the state. The referendum was rejected with a percent margin of 78 to 22. Jeff Gural, the owner of the Meadowlands racetrack was disappointed in the outcome of the vote but not surprised.

The referendum of New Jersey was perhaps the most talked about in regards to gambling expansion for the 2016 ballot as it created a heated debate in the state. Record amounts were spent by interest groups, both hoping to see their side win. As voting drew near it became clear based on studies that residents in New Jersey were not interested in seeing gaming expand beyond the borders of Atlantic City.

Voters in Rhode Island had different thoughts on expanding gambling in their state and decided to approve a measure that will permit an existing casino in Newport to transfer their license to the area of Tiverton. The proposal is subject to local approval, with the town of Tiverton is expected to receive at least $3 million a year from the casino gaming venue.
