App Store and Google Play store still have problems when it comes to online casinos that also have mobile apps. The reason for that is that mobile apps are very easy to download and upload on the store which creates room for illegal gambling and other illegal gambling-related activities. Therefore, in order to lessen this threat and protect their customers from any kind of illegal gambling, the officials at Apple changed their policy and started deleting all the gambling-related apps that are made by individual developers.
A great number of apps has already been removed from the store and hundreds of apps are yet to follow as they pose a threat to the users. Apart from the gambling apps, Apple also deleted many of the apps that have no connection to this industry – but the reasonable explanation was left out for them this time.
This change in the policy of the App Review became active only one week after Apple had to delete 38 gambling-related apps from the Norwegian App Store. In May, the Norwegian Gambling Authority made a request for Apple to block access to these apps. They stated that there was no appropriate licensing in Norway and that the residents of this country should not be able to access the gambling apps. Norway currently has two gambling operators which are fully licensed to operate in this country and they are Norsk Tipping and Norsk Rikstoto. Both of these companies are owned by the state.
All of these issues probably made Apple think twice about the possible things that could happen from the gambling apps abuse and they immediately started working on changing their policy regarding this type of apps. The latest measures clearly show that they have taken this seriously and that the laws regarding gambling apps are now much more strict. They clearly state that the gambling apps from individual developers will not be available anymore on the platform. Furthermore, even the games which are played with fake money and come from individual developers will not be deleted and no more allowed on the App Store.
Apple states that the accounts which can upload gambling and casino apps can be only those from the verified accounts that are a part of incorporated business entities. However, one of the problems that currently arises here is that there are many individual developers that have verified accounts and gambling apps which are popular. They are legit in every way and Apple is still unclear on what to do with them.
One more speculation why apple removes not only gambling apps but also some other apps is because of almost all of them allow unrestricted web access. This type of apps is usually marked with 17+ and if downloaded by children, they can mislead them and have very bad consequences. Therefore, Apple probably decided to remove many of the apps of this type in order to make the App Store a safer place.
