Terrible's Hotel Casino in Jean, Nevada, Could Become an Industrial Park

The COVID-19 pandemic paralyzed many businesses. Terrible’s Hotel & Casino in Nevada was one of the unlucky businesses that felt the impact of the pandemic. Most of the business’ operations were affected, and several of the departments in the hotel shut down.

A real estate developer from Reno has come to the rescue of the hotel but with entirely different plans. Tolles Development Group is a commercial real estate company specializing in retail, office, and multifamily residential complex construction.

The company has contacted Terrible’s Hotel & Casino with plans to buy the hotel that has remained closed since March 17, 2020. The hotel is located about 25 miles south of the Las Vegas Strip. This location was ideally strategic during the pre-COVID-19 times and attracted several guests and players.

The CEO of the Tolles Development Group, Par Tolles, said he was awaiting approval from the county when he spoke to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. To construct a vast industrial park, Tolles will acquire the hotel and the surrounding empty land.

According to Tolles, the industrial park project will use about 140 acres. It will be primarily used as a warehouse and a distribution facility. The Clark County Zoning Commission is expected to answer the proposal on 16 February 2022.

History of Terrible’s Hotel and Casino in Jean, Nevada

The Terrible’s Hotel & Casino is owned by the Herbst family. It is one of the most prominent families in Nevada’s gaming industry. The family has contributed to the development of the gaming industry and attracted many people in the area.

Herbst Gaming was formed in the 1980s when servicing gas stations and convenience stores. With time, they became more popular and acquired full-sized casino resorts.

The Herbst owned two casinos in Pahrump, and in 1999, they purchased the Continental Hotel east of the Las Vegas Strip. The Continental Casino changed its name in 2000 to Terrible’s Hotel and Casino.

Herbst Gaming went bankrupt after a financial crisis when Nevada forbade indoor smoking in restaurants and bars. It went to creditors, and its name changed to Affinity Gaming. The Terrible’s Hotel in Las Vegas is known as Sevens Hotel & Casino.

Herbst Gaming was restructured as JETT Gaming, and in 1987, they opened Terrible’s Hotel and Casino in Jean, Nevada, formerly known as Gold Strike Hotel and Gambling Hall.

The Future of Terrible’s Hotel

The Nevada officials released an official note in June 2020 to allow all gaming operations to resume. However, Terrible’s Hotel and Casino did not reopen. The Herbst’s did not give any official statement about why they were remaining closed.

The closing down of Terrible’s Hotel and Casino turned Jean, Nevada, into a ghost town with minimal activity since it is one of the largest Chevron gas stops. Drivers have no reason to stop in the area.

Currently, the only residents in Jean are the inmates in Jean Conservation Camp. The Jean Conservation Camp is a prison run by the Nevada Department of Corrections.

According to Tolles, once the industrial park has gotten a go-ahead from the county official, the desolate Terrible’s Hotel will stay for one year and then be demolished. Currently, the hotel has over 800 hotel rooms.
