Former first-round pick Eli Apple’s deal with the Las Vegas Raiders was a forgone conclusion this week until Friday when the deal apparently fell through, according to NFL.com. Apple has spent the better part of the last two seasons with the New Orleans Saints after being drafted by the New York Giants in the 2016 draft.
The former Ohio State Buckeye has three interceptions and three forced fumbles in his career after being selected with the 10th overall selection. Apple made national headlines in 2016 when he was asked by a Falcons assistant coach if he was a homosexual in a pre-draft interview.
After joining the Giants, he was suspended for conduct detrimental to the team at the end of the 2017 season and later went on a Twitter rant where he called out Giants fans for “fake love.”
Apple has been quiet since leaving the Giants when the Saints traded fourth- and seventh-round draft picks for him in the 2018 season. The Saints could recoup a draft pick depending on how the market values Apple.
In the aftermath of the failed signing, the Raiders have signed former Packers and Browns defensive back Damarious Randall to a one-year contract. Randall has 14 career interceptions and recorded career highs in sacks (2.5) in just 11 games played last season.
NFL RedZone to Re-Air 2019 Sundays
Starting on Monday, NFL RedZone will air each week’s broadcast from the 2019 season for 17 consecutive days. Given the fact that unemployment rates are skyrocketing and stay-at-home orders are getting more stringent due to the coronavirus pandemic, even replays of the NFL season will be a welcome addition to sports programming.
The 17 weeks of NFL action will be aired in succession from April 6 to April 22, giving football fans the opportunity to see every touchdown from the 2019 NFL season.
O’Brien Stands Behind Hopkins Trade
In a virtual town hall meeting with season-ticket holders on Friday, Houston Texans coach Bill O’Brien explained that while DeAndre Hopkins did have three seasons remaining on his current deal prior to the team dealing him to the Arizona Cardinals, the elite wide receiver was seeking a raise.
The most interesting thing about O’Brien’s comments was not what he said so much as how he said them, saying Hopkins “was a great football player” and that the Texans “loved DeAndre Hopkins.” Speaking in the past tense like that could indicate that there was something else going on, but that is only speculation.
A four-time Pro Bowl selection, Hopkins has logged five 1,000-yard seasons and has never had a season with fewer than 800 yards. He has a career catch percentage of 60% and has only missed two regular-season games since landing in the league in 2013.
Running back David Johnson, who came to Houston in the trade, has appeared in just 30 games in the last three seasons and has not recorded a 1,000-yard rushing season since 2016.
