Not long after gaming regulators in the state of Nevada decided that daily fantasy sports betting sites could not operate in the state unless licensed, the World Series of Poker will be ending their partnership with a top DFS operator. The World Series of Poker will no longer be partnered with DraftKings, after beginning a working relationship back in 2014.
In a report with the New York Times, Seth Palansky of the WSOP, stated that in light of the news from Nevada last week, DraftKings asked the company to cease any sponsorship activities based on the remaining WSOP events of the year, and the WSOP will comply.
Earlier in the year, DraftKings had offered online poker players a satellite for $27 to earn a seat to the Main Event of the 2015 WSOP. Max Steinberg, who is now a November Niner this year, earned his seat this very way, by using DraftKings. Steinberg even wore the logo of DraftKings as he competed but is not affiliated with the company any longer.
As Nevada moved to prohibit DFS sites from operating without a sports betting license, they become the 6th state in the US to prohibit such activity. Other states are now looking into the activity after an investigation into the industry was spurred by the state of New York and other areas of the US. The query is to whether or not the activity is considered gambling, which is the ruling that Nevada has decided upon.
DraftKings Spokeswoman, Sabrina Macias, stated that the site will no longer be offering contest winners free entries to the final poker tournament. This is due to daily fantasy sports no longer being authorized within the state of Nevada, according to Macias. This is just one of a number of changes that are most likely to take place now that Nevada considers daily fantasy sports a form of gambling, that will require licensing to be a legal operation.
