The Illinois Senate President, John Cullerton, has become a big supporter of online poker. Cullerton has announced that the state of Illinois should move quickly to establish themselves as a leader in online poker as well as other online gambling options. The senate president wants to create a new division with the state lottery to become the first state in the US with online gambling.
Cullerton sat down and wrote a letter to the governor of the state, Pat Quinn, as well as other members of legislation. The letter read, in part: “The state could organize the first major poker pool, garner worldwide popularity, and position itself as a ‘hub’ for multi-state and international iGaming.” Cullerton went on to state that he believes it is ‘imperative’ that the state acts now before other states take the lead.
The democrat is proposing a piece of legislation which would create a new division of the state lottery titled the Division of Internet Gaming. This new division would make the state the first in the US to offer online gambling and it would be relatively easy since the state already offers lottery tickets online.
Cullerton has estimated that the state could earn hundreds of millions of dollars in the process. Despite these estimates, there are still some that are opposed. Christine Radogno the senate minority leader commented: “We should not rush to vote on this proposal, blinded by some dollar signs. This is a massive expansion of gambling that deserves serious consideration.”
With the new proposal, gamblers twenty one years of age or older can access the option if they live in the state of Illinois. Players would be able to set the maximum amount of time as well as money they would like to spend gambling on the sites.
Senator Terry Link is supporting Cullerton’s efforts. Link sated that he believes Cullerton’s proposal has ‘unlimited potential’ and that since millions of people are already participating in online gambling options there is no reason the state should not earn money that they are losing. Link believes that the state should act now because it is better to be first than last, and many other states are already working to legalize this option.
