The date has officially been set for the heads-up poker rematch between Phil Hellmuth and Tom Dwan on High Stakes Duel III. On January 26, Hellmuth will get his rematch in the game to be aired on PokerGo at 8 PM EST.
This will be a $400,000 heads-up match in the second clash between the two poker superstars. Dwan defeated Hellmuth in Round two, winning $200,000 from the legend in a match last August that lasted more than six hours.
Hellmuth Out for Revenge
In Round one of the series, FS1 broadcaster Nick Wright lost his $50,000 buy-in against Hellmuth and declined a rematch, which losing players have the option of requesting at double the stakes. Tom Dwan then accepted the challenge and agreed to put in the $100,000 buy-in to face Hellmuth.
Dwan would be victorious in the marathon matchup, winning the $200,000 prize pool with Hellmuth then requesting a rematch. This doubled the stakes as the buy-in for the rematch must be equivalent to the current prize pool.
The win by Dwan was Hellmuth’s first loss in his eight matches in the program. He won three rounds against Antonio Esfandiari, winning a total of $350,000. Later, he faced Daniel Negreanu, also winning three rounds and the same amount of cash from the Canadian poker star.
The seventh win was against Nick Wright, who refused to face Hellmuth a second time. That could have marked the end of High Stakes Duel III until Dwan accepted the challenge and put up the $100,000.
Dwan Ready for the Felt
In this second matchup between the two, a win by Dwan would mean he could either take the $400,000 and go home or let Hellmuth try again in Round four, meaning the latter would have to put up another $400,000 to get a third chance against Dwan.
Phil Hellmuth is a poker legend who is ranked 19th on the all-time money list and won his first WSOP bracelet in 1989, in which he took the $10,000 No-Limit Hold ’em World Championship. He also has 154 cashes at the WSOP and has reached 64 final tables, both records. Hellmuth has more than $26 million in winnings at live tournaments and a total of 16 WSOP bracelets in his possession.
Tom Dwan was just three years old when the Poker Brat won his first WSOP bracelet. However, he’s come a long way since then. He began his career playing online poker and, in 2007, won a total of $312,800 on Full Tilt Poker.
The following year, he won another $5.41 million on the site. In total, he has reached three final tables at the WSOP but has yet to get a bracelet. Dwan has finished in the money ten times across several WSOP events.
Dwan reached one final table on the World Poker Tour and finished in the money twice. His career live earnings are just over $5 million, with his biggest live win being the No-Limit Hold ’em EntryTriton Poker Super High Roller Series in London in 2019, where he took home $793,775.
