Barcelona Poker Scam Spreads to other EPT Events

hacker-300x200Just a few weeks ago, reports surfaced that poker players attending the European Poker Tour Barcelona event had their laptops tampered with. We covered the story when it first began and now have learned that additional laptops could be connected to the very same scam but in different locations.

This story just surfaced two weeks ago when Jens Kyllonen and Ignat Liviu came forward stating their hotel rooms had been accessed and laptop of both players was stolen and modified. The required password access for the computers had been removed and security with PokerStars, the company behind the EPT, began looking into the issue.

Players instantly became concerned with security, especially concerning personal property. TwoPlusTwo was abuzz with the story and now more players are coming forward having experienced similar instances. Pokerfuse reports that Scott Seiver , a champion of the WPT, is the most recent poker pro to take to TwoPlusTwo forums to discuss a similar instance. Known as mastr on the forums, Seiver stated that a similar thing happened to him while in Berlin and he reportedly did not have any help from PokerStars or security at the hotel.

Jason Koon is another poker pro who reported another instance that took place at the EPT Deauville earlier this year. His laptop appeared to be tampered with and he then had a loss of $48k to a player known as Pooklook2. This players account has been accused of forced disconnections during high stakes game play. Players continue to talk about different instances all involving the EPT.

PokerStars recently spoke to Pokerfuse and issued a statement:

“The European Poker Tour and PokerStars take security of our players and their belongings extremely seriously and do everything we can to assist when there are issues, including the recent reports of laptop thefts during EPT. While we are not an investigative body, we are providing information and evidence to law enforcement organizations that will help them find and prosecute the offenders. We are working with our tour hotels to ensure that best practice security procedures are in place to minimize the risk of such thefts and/or tampering. And we are providing information and guidance to our players about how they can best protect themselves from theft of or tampering with their laptops.”
