NFL News and Notes: NFL Elects To Expand Playoffs

Miami Dolphins vs. Kansas City Chiefs Betting Pick

The NFL has expanded its playoffs to include 14 teams. The change will take place immediately, assuming the 2020 season takes place. The change means that the No. 2 seed in each conference will no longer receive a bye. Instead, they will play the No. 7 seed in the first round of the playoffs.

I am on both sides of the fence on this decision. First, I do not like that the No. 2 seed no longer receives a bye. I think that the NFL season is so grueling that if you are good enough to snag one of those top two seeds, you deserve a reward.

I think the sixth and seventh seeds should play to move on, similar to the way baseball has their playoffs.

On the other hand, I like that the playoffs have expanded. Too often, we are leaving quality teams out of the postseason. The Rams and the Cowboys would be examples from the 2019 season.

Both of those teams couldn’t have made it under the new rule, but they both had championship upside if they were able to get it together for a playoff run.

According to a report on ESPN.com, the two-team addition will generate a projected $150 million in broadcast rights and stadium revenue. You can say what you want about their motivations and whether or not they are altruistic, but the NFL does know how to market itself, and one thing is for sure, America loves football.

It is a bad deal for the No. 2 seed in the playoffs but a good deal for both fans and the bottom line.

Browns Sign Veteran DE Clayborn

Journeyman defensive end Adrian Clayborn signed with the Cleveland Browns. Clayborn has been in the league since 2011 and has recorded 36.5 sacks in 110 career games. He is expected to start opposite the Browns cornerstone defender Myles Garrett.

Clayborn’s best season came in 2017 during his first stint with the Atlanta Falcons when he recorded 9.5 sacks, recorded 17 quarterback hits and forced two fumbles. He has played a season with New England and another with the Falcons since then.

Clowney Reduces Asking Price

Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has reportedly reduced his asking price from $20 million per season to around $17 to $18 million, according to a report from ESPN. The six-year NFL veteran had spent his entire career with the Houston Texans before being traded to the Seahawks shortly before the 2019 season.

The question here is: Is he worth that much? While Clowney is certainly a big name and has made some spectacular plays in his career, his numbers don’t exactly reflect such a hefty price tag.

While he does put plenty of pressure on the opposing quarterback and records a ton of hits, he has never recorded more than 9.5 sacks in a season and has only played a full 16 games once in his six-year career. The Titans and Seahawks are said to be interested.
