Hollywod Producer Pleads Guilty in High-Profile Gambling Bust

bryan_zuriff_194Back in April, the US federal government busted a large gambling ring and thirty-four people were indicted. As of this week, the first defendant from that case, Hollywood producer Bryan Zuriff, has now plead guilty to charges stemming from illegal internet gambling activity.

Zuriff is known for producing both television and motion pictures and admitted in court this week that he was guilty of accepting a financial instrument that was involved with unlawful internet gambling. US Attorney Preet Bharara has been heavily involved in the case and he commented on Zuriff, stating:

“Bryan Zuriff spanned the coasts with his crimes, by operating his own illegal gambling enterprise in Los Angeles, and helping to operate a vast illegal gambling enterprise in New York. With his plea, he becomes the first defendant, but not the last, to be convicted in this sprawling script of criminal conduct.”

Government officials state that Zuriff was operating a business that provided illegal gambling activities. Zuriff would provide gamblers with betting options on Los Angeles sporting events and he would also help other operators in New York create gambling opportunities for high profile people.

The New York gamblers would place a wager through a specific account and these accounts were monitored by gambling sites that were not legal in the US. Every year, the accounts would pass millions of dollars in wagers.

With his guilty plea, Zuriff now faces up to five years in prison with three years of supervised release. Zuriff will also surrender $500,000 as part of his guilty plea. Zuriff will not know his punishment until he is sentenced by the judge in the case which will take place in November.
