Wednesday Night Baseball: Red Sox @ Yankees

The Boston Red Sox visit the New York Yankees on Wednesday night. The game starts at 6:05 central. Boston has earned a share of the division lead by going 6-4 in their last ten games, giving them a 25-10 record. The Yankees, however, have been surging. New York owns a 7 game winning streak that saw them take the opener of this series 3-2. This winning streak had pushed them into first place in the American League East alongside Boston.

In this game Rick Porcello takes the hill for Boston. Porcello has been on fire this year, amassing a spotless 5-0 record. He also owns an impressive 2.14 ERA. For New York, fans will see Masahiro Tanaka take the mound. Tanaka has a good 4-2 record, combined with a 4.39 ERA. New York is favored in this matchup: at -145.

Red Sox

Boston has a distinct advantage in this matchup, and his name is Rick Porcello. Porcello is a groundout pitching right-hander. Seeing how well Giancarlo Stanton hit the ball yesterday, a ground ball pitcher it’s the last thing Stanton will want to see. This combined with the fact that Porcello comes from the right side of the mound should make this matchup challenging for Stanton.

Look for him to ground out at least a couple times. The same can be said about Stanton’s swing-happy counterpart Aaron Judge. The hitter Porcello will really need to key in on is Didi Gregorious. While Gregorious has come back to earth, he still owns a .301 average and 30 RBIs, making him a threat to any right handed pitcher.

Yankees

Since being be called up, Gleybar Torres has impressed. Through 16 games at second base, he has earned a .333 batting average. Through this small sample size, he has also driven in 11 runs. However, he has also struck out 12 times while only walking 4 times. While Torres is still a rookie, he will have to show better plate discipline in order to help New York on Wednesday.

The aforementioned Gregorious will have to step up and contribute as well. While nobody can be expected to maintain the high .360s batting average that he boasted early in the season, he has still not been very good lately (he went 0-4 on Tuesday in the important opener of this series). Look for Gregorious to start each at bat out aggressively. This approach could help it hinder him, depending on what Porcello is throwing. If Gregorious can jump on an ill-advised curveball, then watch out.

Red Sox top Yankees

Rick Porcello has done nothing but succeed this season, and there’s no reason to believe he will stop on Wednesday. Porcello is facing the type of lineup that favors a sinker-baller like himself: an aggressive, power hitting lineup that features a lot of youth. Porcello will eat them alive, forcing many groundouts. It’s Porcello’s game to lose, which he won’t do. Look for him to start with the sinker and never look back. Take Boston at +125.
