NBA Betting Preview: Washington Wizards at Orlando Magic

Yeah, life really isn’t very good for the Wizards right now. They did start with this record two years ago and still qualify for the postseason, but with the roster they have now, and the amount of money they spent to put this group together, things have to change, AND FAST.

Orlando at 4-7 is showing they are still not ready to be a legitimate competitor. They haven’t made the playoffs since Dwight left. With all the talent they have, they really just have to start winning games. They were 8-5 through 13 last year— already a step back.

Wizards Off to Slow Start

How do you have a team that is 2-8 when you have one of the most talented back-courts in the entire league, a $25 million per year SF who can shoot lights out and defend well, a stretch four who buries threes, and DWIGHT HOWARD as your starting five? Well, it’s simple really. John Wall always tries to do too much, Bradley Beal doesn’t get enough touches in some games, and they tend to ignore Otto Porter. Dwight is finally back in the lineup, but they love perimeter shots so he doesn’t get too many looks down low.

They have decent bench players in Jeff Green and Austin Rivers, but neither have done enough to help them win. They hardly use the extremely overpaid Ian Mahinmi, and the locker room seems to be having a lot of issues. What they need tonight is for Dwight Howard to attack Nikola Vucevic early and often, and have John Wall attack DJ Augustin frequently. Do this and you may have a chance.

Magic Looking to Win at Home

A new season has begun and Orlando is a bit behind the times. At 101.3 points per game, they rank 29th in the NBA in scoring. We are in an era where you are expected to score AT LEAST 100 points per game, and here Orlando is barely above it. Nikola Vucevic is leading the way with 17 points and 10 boards per game, while taking the minutes Mo Bamba is supposed to be getting. They lack a playmaker at the point guard spot, but have legitimate scoring threats in Aaron Gordon (who needs more looks) and Evan Fournier. Jonathon Isaac is having ankles issues for the second year in a row, too.

To get this win tonight, they are going to need the bench, outside of just Terrence Ross, to step up. Jonathan Simmons needs to be aggressive in looking for his shot. Aaron Gordon should be involved from the outset, and they should free up Nikola Vucevic for some threes, as he has thrived from downtown. If Jerian Grant OR DJ Augustin can score 15+ points, it’ll bode well.

Magic Prevail, Send Wizards to 2-9

Rolling with the Magic tonight, yes we are! 2.5-point underdogs at home, they will get the job done. The Wizards have been beating themselves this year, and tonight is no better.

Congrats to Scott Brooks’ team on falling to 2-9. When are the good days coming?
