Hudson Had Some Struggles

Dakota Hudson started the 1st game for the Cardinals and did not have a good one. He went just 3 2/3 innings, surrendering 6 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks while striking out 3. The bullpen was solid in exception of Mike Mayers, who went 2/3 of an inning and gave up 3 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks. Paul Goldschmidt and Paul DeJong hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the 1st inning but were quiet after that. Marcell Ozuna hit a solo home run in the 9th inning and went 2 for 4.

Freddy Peralta started for the Brewers and struggled as well. He went just 3 1/3 innings allowing 3 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 3. The bullpen was terrific except for Alex Claudio, who recorded just 1 out and allowed 3 runs on 1 hit and 2 walks. Stud closer Josh Hader went an inning and allowed 1 run on 1 hit and struck out the side. Christian Yelich was absolutely incredible in this one, going 3 for 4 with 3 home runs and a walk and drove in 7 runs. Mike Moustakas also hit a solo home run in this one.

Flaherty Gets the Start

Jack Flaherty will start for the Cardinals and is 1-0 with a 2.93 ERA in 3 starts this season and went 8-9 with a 3.34 ERA last season. He faced the Brewers in his season debut and went 4.1 innings allowing 4 runs on 7 hits and a walk while striking out 4. The Cardinals have minimal experience against Brandon Woodruff, but a few have had success in those at-bats. Marcell Ozuna has gone 3 for 7 with a double, Kolten Wong is 2 for 4 with a double, and Paul DeJong is 2 for 4 with a double and a home run. Paul Goldschmidt is just 1 for 6.

Brandon Woodruff will be on the hill for Milwaukee. He is 1-1 with a 6.00 ERA in 3 starts this season. He started just 4 games last year and had a 3.61 ERA in 42 1/3 innings. He also faced tonight’s opponent in his season debut and went 5 innings allowing 2 runs on 6 hits and 1 walk while striking out 5 and recorded the win. The Brewers have struggled against Flaherty and have hit just .194 off him combined. Lorenzo Cain is 5 for 12, and Ryan Braun is 4 for 7 with 2 home runs, but no one else has had success. Christian Yelich is just 3 for 13, and Travis Shaw is 0 for 12.

Take the Brewers

The Brewers are -125. Even though Flaherty has been solid against Milwaukee in his career, the Brewers are swinging the bat incredibly well right now, and Christian Yelich looks like he could repeat as MVP this season. Woodruff has been average this season but has been keeping his team in the ballgame. I think the Brewers bullpen is better than the Cardinals’ and that will be a big factor in this one. Milwaukee will hit the Cardinal bullpen well, and the Brewers’ bullpen will shut down the Cardinal bats en route to victory. Take the Brewers -125.
