Sports Betting Legislation on The Minds of Maryland Lawmakers

With the United States Supreme Court set to hear the sports betting case involving New Jersey by December, several states have been considering legislation that involves sports betting. States that go ahead and provide legislation allowing sports betting to take place, will be ready to offer the activity if the Supreme Court rules in favor of New Jersey. Reportedly, Maryland is the latest state to begin discussing if they should take legislative action on the matter.

According to a report by the Baltimore Business Journal, the Joint Committee on Gaming Oversight of the General Assembly was told by the American Gaming Association Senior VP of Public Affairs Sara Slane that there is momentum for repealing the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act now more than ever before and legislators need to get out in front of this as there are already states that are ready to go if the option becomes available.

Reportedly, both stakeholders and lawmakers are looking at whether or not legislation needs to be created to keep Maryland at the forefront when it comes to a sports betting industry. It is believed that the Supreme Court will make their ruling anywhere from April to June of next year. So states have a little bit of time to decide if legislation should be created to prepare for the possibility of sports betting across the board.

In Maryland, voters would have the opportunity to decide if a law authorizing sports betting were to be created. Voters had a say so in regards to casino gambling around ten years ago and that industry has proven to be very successful.

Earlier this year, a bill was introduced in Maryland to create a task force to study sports gaming implementation. The bill did not move out of committee but the option is still being discussed. With the sports betting study bill, a fiscal analysis was provided. It was found that that the state could see growth of 1.5% to 6.5% when it comes to annual revenues if sports books were added to the six casinos currently in operation in the state.
